The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Super Pit is the biggest gold mine in Australia and is one of the world’s biggest open cut mines. The Super pit is located on the Golden Mile, the richest square mile of gold bearing ore in the world.
The Superpit operates 24 hours a day and is 290m deep, 3km long and 1.5 km’s wide. It is expected that in the next decade the mining will be conducted at a depth of 600m.
The Superpit was opened in 1989 and has produced more than 50,000,000 ounces of gold. The massive ore carrying trucks carry 220 tonnes of ore in one load and it takes 7 truckloads to produce a 2 ounce nugget. Western Australia produces 75% of Australia’s gold production and approximately 8% of the world’s gold production.
