In 1807 the settlement at Norfolk Island had been abandoned by the British Government, and the convict (of which there were quite a few) and farmers, were brought to Tasmania. They formed a new settlement on the Derwent River, about 15 miles above Hobart Town, at a place they named “New Norfolk”, in affectionate memories of their former island home.
